Escape It — Privacy Policy

Last updated: 31 August 2026

Escape It is a single-player maze puzzle game. This policy explains what the app collects, why, and what control you have over it.

The short version. Escape It has no user accounts and no servers of its own. Your puzzle progress, settings and statistics are stored on your device. If you choose to sign in to Game Center or Google Play Games, a copy of your progress is also backed up to your own iCloud or Play Games account, so it survives reinstalling the app or moving to a new phone — we cannot read it. The app sends anonymous usage and crash information to Google Firebase so we can fix problems and understand which features are used. We do not collect your name, email address or precise location, we show no advertising, and we do not track you across other apps or websites.

Information stored on your device

The following is written to your phone or tablet. We never receive any of it, and it is deleted when you uninstall the app.

Some of this is also copied to your own iCloud or Play Games account if you sign in — see Cloud backup below.

Information collected by the app

What Why Collected by
Anonymous usage events — screens opened and buttons pressed (for example starting a level, using undo, changing a setting) To understand which parts of the game are used and where players get stuck Google Firebase Analytics
Device and app information — device model, operating system version, language, country or region derived from IP address, and app version To interpret the above and to reproduce problems on the right devices Google Firebase Analytics
A randomly generated app instance identifier To count sessions and devices without identifying you Google Firebase Analytics
Crash reports — the error, the sequence of code that led to it, and the device state at the time To find and fix crashes Google Firebase Crashlytics

This information is pseudonymous: it is not linked to your name, your email address, or any account you hold with us, because we do not operate accounts.

Game Center and Google Play Games

Signing in to Game Center (iOS) or Google Play Games (Android) is optional, and it does two things: it makes the leaderboard screens work, because a leaderboard cannot exist without a player identity, and it turns on the cloud backup described below. The game itself is fully playable without signing in.

If you do sign in, your public player name, avatar and submitted scores are handled by Apple or Google under their own privacy policies. The app reads leaderboard entries in order to display them to you and submits your scores. It does not copy this information to any server of ours, because we do not have one.

Cloud backup

While you are signed in, Escape It keeps a backup of your progress so that reinstalling the app or moving to a new device does not lose it. This is the only part of the game that sends anything anywhere, and it is worth being precise about where it goes.

It goes to your account, not to us. The backup is written to your own iCloud storage on iOS, or your own Google Play Games saved games on Android, using Apple's and Google's own saved-game features. It is held under your account, subject to their privacy policies. We operate no server, we hold no copy, and we have no way to read, list or recover it — including if you ask us to.

What is backed up:

What is not backed up: the board you are in the middle of playing, and your settings — sound, haptics, theme and board colours stay on the device you chose them on.

When it is written: when you open the app, and when you leave a level and return to the menu. Nothing is uploaded while you are signed out.

When it is read back: only onto a device that has no Escape It progress on it at all — a fresh install, or a new phone. It is never merged with progress already on a device, so it cannot overwrite a game in progress.

How to delete it: the backup lives in your Apple or Google account, so you remove it there rather than through us — in the same place you manage other apps' iCloud data or Play Games saved games. Signing out of Game Center or Play Games stops any further backups immediately. Deleting the app removes the copy on your device but not the copy in your account.

What we do not collect

Escape It contains no advertising and no third-party advertising software.

Legal basis and sharing

Where the UK GDPR or EU GDPR applies, we rely on our legitimate interest in keeping the app working correctly and improving it. Google acts as our data processor for the analytics and crash reporting described above; the data may be processed on Google servers outside your country under Google's own safeguards. We do not sell personal information, and we do not share it with anyone else.

How long it is kept

Analytics events are retained by Firebase for up to 14 months and then deleted automatically. Crash reports are retained for up to 90 days. Data stored on your device is kept until you delete it or uninstall the app. The cloud backup is kept in your own Apple or Google account for as long as you leave it there — its lifetime is theirs and yours, not ours, because we hold no copy of it.
