How to play

Escape It is a maze puzzle you play without a map. You start on one cell and have to reach the exit, laying a path one cell at a time — but you can only see a short distance around your route, so the way ahead is revealed as you go.

Common questions

Why can't I remove a piece by tapping it again?

Placement is deliberate — the puzzle is about committing to a direction without seeing where it leads. Use Undo to take back your last move, or Reset to clear the board and start the level over. Both are limited, and both are refilled as you complete levels.

Why did I lose a life?

A life is spent when a move leaves you with nowhere legal to go — that is, when you step into a dead end. You are not charged again for sitting in one, only for walking into it. You have three lives per level. When the third runs out you restart the level.

Where do undos, resets and hints come from?

You begin with a small supply and earn more every time you clear a level: two undos, one reset and one hint per completed level. They carry over between levels, so banking them on easy boards pays off later.

Why can't I see the whole maze?

That is the game. Cells light up only within a couple of steps of the path you have laid, measured in moves rather than in a straight line — which is why the lit area is diamond-shaped. The largest expert mazes reveal a little further, because a fixed patch of light on a 30×30 board would show almost nothing.

How is my score calculated?

Your score for a level is based on the length of the shortest route through it, not on how many pieces you actually used — so taking the long way round never earns you more. A perfect run adds a bonus, and harder boards are worth a larger multiplier.

What is the daily challenge?

One expert maze per day, identical for every player in the world, chosen by the date itself. Completing it extends your streak. The daily is kept entirely separate from your main progress — playing it never changes the level you are up to.

The leaderboard will not load

The Ranks screen needs two things: a Game Center or Google Play Games account, and a connection. If you are signed in and still see an error, tap Try again — the boards are read live from the platform, and a dropped request is the usual cause.

If your own rank shows as unranked, that simply means you have not posted a score to that board yet. Finish a level while signed in and it will appear. Your scores and statistics are recorded on your device regardless, so nothing is ever lost while you are offline or signed out.

I can't sign in to Game Center

On iPhone and iPad, Game Center will only offer the sign-in prompt once per app launch. If you dismissed it, fully close Escape It and reopen it. If the prompt does not appear at all, open the iOS Settings app, go to Game Center, and check that you are signed in and that Escape It is allowed to use it.

Signing in is optional. The whole game, including the daily challenge, works without an account.

I lost my progress

If you were signed in to Game Center or Google Play Games, your progress is backed up to your own iCloud or Play Games account. Install Escape It on the new or freshly wiped device, sign in with the same account, and it comes back on its own — usually within a few seconds of reaching the menu. There is no button to press.

The backup only restores onto a device with no Escape It progress on it. That is deliberate: it means it can never overwrite a game you already have going. So if you have already played on the new phone, signing in will not pull the old progress across.

If you were signed out, there is no backup — progress lives on the device only, deleting the app deletes it, and it does not move to a new phone. Signing in at any time starts backing up from that point onwards.

If your progress disappeared without you uninstalling anything, please write to us with your device and app version; that is a bug and we want to see it.

What is the Cloud Backup row in Settings?

It shows when your progress was last backed up and which device wrote it. It appears only while you are signed in to Game Center or Google Play Games, since that is what the backup uses. There is nothing to press — backing up happens on its own when you open the app and when you finish with a level.

If it says it is still checking, the app has not been able to reach Apple's or Google's servers yet. That is usually a connection problem and sorts itself out; your progress is safe on the device either way.

How do I report a bug or suggest something?

Email escapeit.maze@gmail.com. Screenshots help enormously, especially for anything visual. Feature requests are welcome and genuinely get read.

Privacy

Escape It has no accounts of its own and no servers of its own. The cloud backup above goes to your iCloud or Play Games account, not to us — we cannot read it. What the app does and does not collect is set out in full in the privacy policy.
